Africa’s Democracy Inherited From The West Needs To Be Re-examined – Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo called for Africa to develop a model of democracy that is true to the continent’s heritage and prioritizes the welfare of its people.

Speaking at the Summit on the State of Democracy in Africa at the Yar’adua Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, Obasanjo emphasized the need for a democratic system that benefits all citizens.

The former president of Nigeria noted that African leaders must demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people. He underscored that effective democracy in Nigeria and across Africa requires good leadership, strong institutions, and adherence to the rule of law.

Defining democracy, Obasanjo stated that democracy is a government by the people’s consent, with a clean mandate of the people, free from corruption, and dedicated to the welfare of the masses.

The summit, convened by the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Foundation, with sponsorship from the Ford Foundation and Trust Africa, focused on the achievements, challenges, and threats to democracy in Africa.
