Nigeria’s Popular Cross dresser, Bobrisky, Sentenced to Six Months in Prison

Nigeria’s popular crossdresser, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye popularly known as Bobrisky has been sentenced to jail today, April 12, 2024 for mutilation and abuse of Naira. Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos, during sentencing, emphasized that the verdict would serve as a deterrent to individuals engaged in the abuse and mutilation of the national currency. Prior to the ruling, the judge queried Bobrisky about his gender, to which he promptly responded as male. Consequently, he received a prison term of six month to be served at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre without the option of fine.

The court’s decision stemmed from Bobrisky’s admission of guilt to four counts of abusing the Nigerian currency, as charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The sentencing, originally scheduled for last Thursday, was postponed due to the declaration of a public holiday by the Federal Government for Eid-El-Fitri celebrations.

The charges against Bobrisky outlined instances of currency abuse during social events, with amounts ranging from N20,000 to N400,000 Naira. These acts, occurring between 2022 and 2023 at various locations within Lagos, contravened Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.
