The government of Tanzania is embarking on an ambitious project to construct residential, commercial, and official buildings in several African countries, aiming to boost foreign revenue for its foreign affairs docket. Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, January Makamba, announced that funding for these projects will be sourced through various means, including partnerships and loans.
In Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, a 25-story building will be erected alongside the construction of an embassy. Additional commercial buildings for the Tanzanian government will be established in Kampala, Uganda, and Abuja, Nigeria.
During his budget speech, Makamba highlighted the benefits of President Samia Suluhu’s 4Rs strategy—Reconciliation, Reforms, Resilience, and Rebuilding as part of the motives behind the project.
The overall project is estimated to cost over $1 billion. Makamba detailed that the funds include 150 billion Kenyan Shillings allocated for constructing offices, the ambassador’s residence, and economic investments in Kinshasa.
